Report

Castlereagh Flames, based in Dundonald Ice Bowl, Castlereagh, Northern Ireland, finished in third spot in the Scottish Ice Hockey League Division 1 in 1991-92, with Captain Kevin Griffin from Canada, Chinese signing Fu Cheng, Brian Servetnyk, as well as local heros Gary Irwin and Johnson Flemming playing a significant part of their attempt to retain the Division 1 title.

After winning their first two games of the season in Dundonald, against Tayside Tigers and Kilrkcaldy Kerstels, they then dropped their next two against eventual Champions Livingston Kings. Wins against Kirkcaldy Kestrels and Kilmarnock Jetstream Flyers followed.

Report

_________________________________________________________

Castlereagh Knights entered the Northern Premier League in 1996-97. This was a league combining Scottish and Northern English teams, and this time the Castlereagh team fared less well, finishing last in the league. In 1998-99 another iteration of the Castlereagh team, the Goldwings finished 10th out of 12 teams.

The following year the Odyssey Arena in Belfast was built and the Belfast Giants competed in the Ice Hockey Superleague, a Professional League for the top teams in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

From 1987 to 1998 Irish Teams based in Dundonald Ice Bowl, Castlereagh competed in various iterations of a Scottish League. Before the advent of the Belfast Giants and the Odyssey Arena there was only the Ice Bowl in Dundonald for Irish Ice Hockey and so teams had to travel overseas to Scotland to play competitively.

In 1987-88 the Dundonald Redwings finished a commendable third place in the league and the following year a new team the Castlereagh Flames finished fourth. both teams were knocked out of the Playoff League Cup in the Semi-Final stage. In 1989-90 the Castlereagh Flames finished second, the best performance by an Irish team so far, but were unable to field a team in the League Cup Playoffs. In 1990-91 the Flames finished third, and in 1991-92 fourth.

There then followed a lull in Irish involvement in Scottish Ice Hockey until the Castlereagh Knights entered the Northern Premier League in 1996-97.
